Amcor and Mondelēz International Invest in Licella to Boost Australian Plastics Facility

Industry giants back Licella's innovative recycling facility, set to revolutionise Australasia's approach to plastic waste.

In a landmark move that underscores a commitment to sustainability, Amcor and Mondelēz International have announced their investment in Licella, a global leader in advanced recycling technology. This investment will support the construction of Licella's Australian commercial Cat-HTR™ facility for the recycling of end-of-life plastic.

Licella's Cat-HTR™ platform has been at the forefront of innovative recycling solutions, and this new investment will further its commercial global deployment. The Melbourne-based facility, under development by Licella's subsidiary Advanced Recycling Victoria (ARV), will initially process approximately 20,000 tonnes of end-of-life plastic per annum, with plans to scale up to 120,000 tonnes at full capacity.

The investment agreements signed by Amcor and Mondelēz International will play a crucial role in advancing the construction of this state-of-the-art facility. Both companies have expressed enthusiasm for the project, recognising its potential to bring Australasia closer to more sustainable plastic waste solutions.

Mike Cash, President of Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific, commented, "Amcor will be able to meet increasing customer demand for recycled content in the region with this investment, as well as take another step closer to achieving our target of 30% recycled content across Amcor’s portfolio by 2030."

Darren O’Brien, President – Mondelēz Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, added, "We are thrilled to be taking the lead and responding to our consumers who we know want their soft plastic wrappers to be recycled again and again."

The new Licella-owned ARV facility represents a significant step towards achieving national sustainable packaging targets. It also aligns with the growing demand for sustainable plastic solutions, delivering both economic and environmental benefits.

"We're on a mission to become a more sustainable snacking company, and by collaborating with peers and investing in better systems at scale, we're making our business more resilient, while creating long-term value for the country and world at large," said O'Brien.

This investment comes at a pivotal time in the progression of the ARV project and will help advance Licella to the next stage of viability, moving towards the construction of an Australian first advanced recycling facility.

The collaboration between Licella, Amcor, and Mondelēz International is a testament to the kind of industry leadership needed to advance circular solutions that reduce packaging waste well into the future.

For Online Brands Group (OBG), an investor in Licella, this development marks an exciting phase in the journey towards a more sustainable future.
