Nick has over 20 years’ experience in the telco sector, currently enjoying his role as Managing Director of M Eight P/L, a Master Licensee with 45 Optus Branded Retail stores across the country. Nick started his career in a role at Optus where he experienced the revolution from analogue to digital (GSM) mobile network rollouts . In August ‘95 Nick then joined a high growth start-up telco One.Tel (funded over $1bn) as employee no.20 and steered the sales arm through rapid distribution growth, departing shortly before the company bid for spectrum and launched its own network.
Nick has actively lead the growth of the retail distribution footprints for the key challenger Telco brands in the market. Nick has played an integral role in the evolution of Hutchison Telecom business toward relaunching as the ‘Orange’ brand (Prior to Orange being acquired by Vodafone). Nick also led the building of the distribution footprint for start-up telco One.Fone P/L, a One.Tel ‘nextgen’ network retail aggregator to over 150 retail stores nationally.
Most recently Nick’s current role as founding partner/(key stakeholder) in m8 has seen Nick drive the rapid roll-out of Optus Branded stores in key strategic locations, with a particular focus on convenience shopping centres and developing a highly skilled layer of sub-licensees that for the most part meet certain ethnic demographics. There was a strong view that the right sub-licensee, speaking the right language, truly connected with their local communities. A DNA that focused on exemplary customer experiences, was the road forward to mitigating the growing risk of online transactions. This strategy has been, and continues to be, proven correct.
“I’ve seen plenty of success in business, and seen a long list of mistakes along theway….most of which stem from a lack of understanding that your people are your key pillar. You can have all the operational rigor, understanding of your market and marketing strategies, and a strong financial plan….yet without the right value placed on people, it fails to deliver”.
In his spare time you will find Nick surfing or snowboarding with his 3 daughters. Also a podcast addict, positive ideas are free flowing. “I find that the ocean, the mountain or the yoga mat are 3 of the best places where I can truly drop off the grid and come back stronger”.
